Traditional synthetic Pesticides and Insecticides are instrumental in achieving significant increase in crop protection. But their application hazards and residual toxicity to humans and environments are well know and documented. These have always been a perennial concern of all.

Countries around the world are using five to ten kilograms of synthetic Toxicants per acre per year, there by polluting environment continuously. Realising this danger and with the sole objective of protecting the crop with safer products, Scientists worldwide are in search of Bio-pesticides.

A revolutionary breakthrough :

Milestone towards environment friendly product in insect- pests control has been the use of natural, non-toxic, completely biodegradable, Herbal product with pesticidal properties. NEEM is t ...he best effective source known to man for centuries for its natural and comprehensive insect-pests control properties. If one observes the NEEM tree 'Azadirachta Indica' closely, it is found to be virtually free from Insects and Nematodes. Scientists have found that this is due to the presence of natural compound 'Azadirachtin' that acts as Antifeedants or Growth regulators in insects. They do not kill instantly but wipe out a whole generation of insects by preventing the young ones from maturing and adults from reproducing. It also inhibits ' Ecdysone' the major insect molting harmone, there by preventing insects from completing molting process. Amazingly, it is also non toxic to beneficial parasites and predators. It effectively prevents feeding in more than 200 insects. In contrast, synthetic pesticides are Neurotoxins that kill by poisoning the nerve cells.

What is NEEMHIT :

NEEMHIT is natural, non- toxic, completely Biodegradable, Herbal product for diverse Biological effects such as Repellant, Antifeedants, Oviposition, Deterrent. It is also a Sterilant with Ovicidal properties.

NEEMHIT contains limonoids-a compound that act as Insecticidal, Nematicidal, Antibacterial, Antifungal and Antiviral effects.

NEEMHIT is compatible with Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs.

NEEMHIT is scientifically tested and documented for stability, effectiveness and various other parameters necessary before introducing in the world market.

NEEMHIT is a liquid formulation with at least 90% of NEEM extract and containing not less than 300 ppm of active compound Azadirachtin (Tetranortriterpenoids).

Mode of action of NEEMHIT

Antifeedant : Both volatile & volatile fractions exhibit antigustatory properties, resulting in appreciable reduction in feeding activity of insects.

Repellent : Olfactory message given by the treated surface repels the insects. Oviposition is also affected as a result.

Growth Regulatory Effect : Metabolism is disturbed during various phases of development. Egg development and hatching is affected, moulting of larvae is disturbed, thereby preventing the formation of pupae. Juvenilizing effect has also been reported.

Inactivity on Predators and Parasites : Since entomophagous insects are not affected by NEEMHIT , the insect-pests are kept under check.

Systemic Activity : Interestingly in addition to contact activity, Azadirachtin is proved to have systemic action. Seedlings absorb material through roots and transport the active components into the leaves making the whole plant resistant to insects.

Spectrum of Action : NEEMHIT has broad spectrum of action which encompasses various crop pests including Cowpeaweavil, Spotted cucumber beetle, Rice Hispa, Mexican bean beetle, Colorado potato beetle, Lesser grain borer, Rice weevil, Red flour beetle, Khapra beetle, Sorghum shootfly, Vegetable Leafminer, Rice galf midge, Red cotton bug, White fly, Green rice leafhopper, Brown planthopper, Cotton bollworm, Spyni bollworm, Gypsy moth, Tobacco hornworm, Pink bollworm, Potato tuber moth, Diamond-back moth, Tobacco caterpillar, Migratory locust, Desert locust etc.

Formulations :

NEEMHIT is available in water emulsifiable concentrate with at least 90% Neem extract containing not less than 300 ppm of active compound Azadirrachtin, readily miscible with water to yield reach emulsion.

Stability :

The stability of NEEMHIT emulsifiable concentrate has been found to be excellent for over 2 years under normal storage conditions. Under accelerated temperature conditions, the formulations are stable at 500C for over one month.

Dosage and Method of Application :

Low volume Spray : Spray 1 to 1.5 liters of NEEMHIT per acre.

High volume spray : Spray 5 ml NEEMHIT per liter water and cover the entire foilage.

Tank Mix : Along with standard dose, mix 3ml NEEMHIT per litre of spray solution.

NEEMHIT spray mix is applied using spray applicators. As presowing treatment, soil application or seeding root dip method may be adopted. Spraying should be done during cooler hours for the better results. Spray within eight hours of preparation of spray mixture. Repeat spraying if it rains within six hour of spraying. NEEMHIT may be sprayed in alternate rounds with regular pesticides, and is compatible with most insecticides, fungicides, micro nutrients and weedicides This provides a more effective and comprehensive combination of biological and chemical controls. As a Prophylactic treatment NEEMHIT repels pests effectively at 500 ml per acre.

Usage :

NEEMHIT controls a wide range of insect-pests which are present in a wide range of crops. NEEMHIT finds application in plantation crops fodder crops and rootcrops, floriculture, horticulture, cereals, pulses, oilseeds, vegetables, gardens, orchards, nursery kitchen garden, golfcourse, potted plants, forestry species etc.

Toxicology :

NEEMHIT is non-toxic and absolutely safe compound for animals, environment and human beings. Plant phytotoxicity problems have not been found during in-house trials. There are no re-entry restrictions-workers can return to field once the spray has dried.

Antidote :

May cause slight nausea on ingestion. Induce vomiting if ingested. Treat symptomatically.

Storage :

Store NEEMHIT in cool, dry place away from flame and children. Protect from sunlight.

A WORLDWIDE RESEARCH

Scientist interest in NEEM grew out of increasing concern about the toxicity of synthetic pesticides. Scientist who have evaluated NEEM extractives and they will be sufficient proof of tremendous interest evinced by scientific community in NEEM a few are listed here.

Martin Jacobson of United States Dept. of Agriculture -Agricultural Research Centre in Beltsville, Madison, USA, Comments, 'Formulation of extracts of Neem trees are highly effective against at least 128 species of crop pests including Gypsy moth, Aphids, Tobacco budworm, Japanese beetle and Boll weevil. Greenhouse studies with Spodoptera sp. Larvae on newly emerged corn plants showed that 0.2% emulsion of the extract retained anti-feedant potency for at least 21 days. USDA Scientists are co-operating with the industry for commercial development of Neem extract.'

Dr. R. C. Saxena of International Centre of Physiology and Ecology, Manila, Philippines, is fully convinced about ESSENTIALITY OF NEEM EXTRACT for Rice culture and has contributed his findings on Neem ectract to a number of International forums. According to him, 'Neem extract is a contact and volatile ovipositional deterrent............ is potential Anti-Feedant against Insect pests of Rice like Brown plant hopper, Green leaf hopper, Sogatella; Virus transmission is reduced and the product is safe for environment.'

Dr. S. E. Reynolds and K.D. Wing of University of Bath, U.K., have done work on Neem tree products and have discovered that, 'A Triterpenoid from Neem tree inhibits feeding, disrupts ecdysis in Meduca caterpillar. The terpenoid, Azadirachtin, is a powerful growth regulator of insect pests and an ideal tool to thwart their growth and reproduction.'

In one of the oldest and most respected Research Institutes in India, Research is being done on Neem extracts. Dr. S. R. Chavan of Dept. of Phytochemistry, Haffkine Institute, Bombay has isolated from Neem leaves, alkanes which gave 100% mortality at 10 ppm concentration for 5 days on Culex mosquitoes.

Dr. S. Pradhan and Dr. M.G. Jotwani of Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, have studied various parts of Neem plants and have found Anti-Feedant and Repellent activity of the extracts. High degree of Anti-Feedant activity was found against the Desert locust, Schistocera gregaria. Anti-Feedant properties have been determined by them against several field pests, including Spodoptera litura, Euproctis lunata, Acrida exaltata. In recent field trials, they have found granular formulations of Neem kernel effective against Corn and Sorghum stem borers. The Juvenilizing effect of Azadirachtin on Spodoptera litura has been reported recently by Entomology Division of Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi.

West Germany is one of the worlds leading Countries doing research on Neem. Dr. K. Ermel and Dr. E. Pahlich, of Justus Liebig University, Giessen, FRG, have found that extracts of seed kernels from India gave the best yields of Azadirachtin, Whereas those of Sudanese origin gave lowest amounts. They also correlated growth regulating efficacy with Azadirachtin in trials with Aedes aegypti and Epilachna varivestis as test insects.

In Thailand kasetsart University of Bangkok is undertaking the work on effects of Neem extracts on Insect pests of economic importance in Thailand. Their Scientists found no egg deposition of the Oriental Fruit fly, Dacus dorsalis, for 2 days on Banana after Neem extract treatment. The dreaded Insect Diamond back moth, Plutella larvae were treated with 0.1% Neem kernel extract and it was found that survival rate, to adult stage, dropped sharply (0%-21%)

Dr. H. Rembold and H. Forster of Max Planck Institute of West Germany have isolated Azadirachtin from Neem (Azadirachta indica). The substance was found to inhibit egg development and prevent moulting. The half life of the active principal was more than a week. In mainland china, the search for environmentally sound methods of controlling Insect pests is underway for many years. The results indicate that polar components are systemic in action while others have Anti-Feedant activity. Results of Azadirachtin were positive against Nilparvata lugens, Orseolia oryzae (Gallmidge). International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), Hyderabad India, have undertaken work on bio-assay of solvent extracts of Neem tree and have found that the treated larvae of Oriental army worm on Sorghum could not pupate.
